The Dreamer

I dreamt of a land where the sun never shone,
Where the night was eternal and cold as a stone;
Where the stars were extinguished and the moon hid her face,
And the only light came from a dim, spectral grace.

I dreamt of a land where the silence was deep,
Where no voice ever spoke and no ear ever heard;
Where the wind never whispered and the birds never sang,
And the only sound came from a low, mournful dirge.

I dreamt of a land where the life was all gone,
Where no heart ever beat and no breath ever stirred;
Where the flowers were withered and the trees were all bare,
And the only thing living was a pale, spectral glare.

I dreamt of a land where the beauty was lost,
Where no eye ever gazed and no soul ever felt;
Where the colors were faded and the shapes were all blurred,
And the only thing lovely was a dark, spectral belt.

I dreamt of a land where the horror was king,
Where no hope ever dawned and no fear ever quelled;
Where the shadows were lurking and the fiends were all rife,
And the only thing certain was a dread, spectral life.

I dreamt of a land where the dreamer was I,
Where I wandered alone in that desolate place;
Where I searched for a way to escape from that gloom,
And the only thing guiding was a faint, spectral doom.
